There are few things worse than receiving telemarketing calls, and it seems like with each year, you receive more and more of them. They call early when you're trying to sleep late, they call in the middle of your dinner and some of them call over and over again, even if you tell them to stop calling. Even worse, some of the calls you receive may be scams. While it won't eliminate all calls, adding your number to the Do Not Call Registry can help cut down the number of unsolicited calls you receive. Here's how to do it:

Visit the FTC Website

The Do Not Call Registry is operated by the Federal Trade Commission, an agency of the US government. Start by visiting its website at Ftc.gov. Once you're there, you'll see several options, all relating to protecting American consumers. Under the "Take Action" category, you'll see options for things you can do to protect yourself. Click on the one that says "Register for Do Not Call."

Choose to Register Your Phone

Once you've clicked "Register for Do Not Call," the website will redirect you to Donotcall.gov. From here, you have several options. You can report unwanted calls, verify whether or not you've added your phone to the registry in the past, and go ahead and add your phone if you're certain it's not already on there. There are also links for you to check out some FAQs about the registry and report unwanted calls you received even if it's been 31 days since you've added your phone number to the registry. Click on "Register Your Phone."

Verify Previous Registrations

Registrations for the Do Not Call Registry began in 2003, so it's possible you've added your number in the past and don't remember. For this reason, you may need to verify whether or not your number is already on the registry. To do this, click on "Verify Here." Then enter up to three phone numbers you'd like to verify, along with your email address. Check over your information to make sure it's correct and press "Submit." If your phone number is already on the list, you'll receive an email with that information along with the date it was added. If it's not, the numbers will be added automatically.

Register Your Number

If you know for a fact you've never added your number, simply click on the button that says "Register Here" and skip the verification process. Again, you can enter up to three phone numbers that you'd like to register and your email address. Click "Submit," and you'll receive an email verifying that you've been added to the Do Not Call Registry. It can take up to 31 days for the registration to take effect and for you to stop receiving unwanted calls.

Report Unwanted Calls

After 31 days, if you're still receiving unwanted calls from telemarketers and other organizations, you can report them at Donotcall.gov. Visit the website and click on "Report Unwanted Calls." Read over the list of reasons why you can report calls and learn why you still may receive calls from particular organizations, like political organizations and charities. Click on "Continue" after you've read the information and begin filling out the the report. you'll need information like the number from which you received the call, the date and time you received the call, what type of call you received (robocall, live phone call or text message) and the subject matter of the call.
